PM Harper Receives AHEPA Socrates Award

AHEPA-Canada (American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association) awarded on April 26, in an event held in the ballroom of the Chateau Laurier Hotel in Ottawa, the Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, with their highest honor, the Socrates Award.

According to the AHEPA-Canada press release, the award was “bestowed upon an individual who exemplifies the finest traditions of leadership and the promotion of democracy. He will be the fourth Canadian Prime Minister to receive the Socrates Award and will share this honor with past recipients Prime Minister John Diefenbaker, Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and Prime Minister Jean Chretien.”

Although Harper did not manage to attend the event, he said in his greeting: “It is a great honor to receive the Socrates Award and to be one of the few honored by the historic organization AHEPA for their leadership qualities and their contribution to the advancement of Democracy”.

The award, for the Prime Minister, was received by Canada’s Labor Minister Lisa Raitt, who stressed that she was impressed by AHEPA’s history and work not only in Canada, but worldwide.

During the event, George Vasilas, the AHEPA-Canada President, talked about the work of the organization during the 85 years of its function in Canada.

Montreal’s Greeks Welcome Their Brethren By Margarita Papantiou

An increasingly number of Greeks are seeking their fortune in Canada due to the ongoing financial crisis that has put 1.3 million people out of work, and the Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal is trying to help those who come from the homeland.

The group will host an information session on April 17 at the Board Room/Stelios Kiliaris Mikri Vouli to provide information about the bureaucracy concerning immigration to Canada.

The Hellenic Social Services, working with the Citizenship & Immigration Ministry in Canada and with organizations specializing in matters of immigration is hosting the event under the title Demystifying the Immigration Process

Canada and Quebec are accessible to specialized professions according to the new legislation and as a result, this meeting will be multi-dimensional and especially important for those affected.

The Hellenic Community of Greater Montreal has been serving the Greek population of the greater Montreal area (Montreal, Laval and South Shore regions) since 1906. For more than 100 years, the HCGM has continuously been representing Quebec citizens of Greek origin, who have settled and continue to settle in the greater Montreal area.

The group said its goal is to constantly enrich and unify its members, by bringing them together, responding to their needs as well as, strengthening the bond with other cultural communities in the Greater Montreal area, as reported in the HCGM’s website.

Avramopoulos Pushes Greek-Canada Ties

Greek Foreign Minister Dimitris Avramopoulos met on Feb. 27 in the Canadian Senate with Senate Speaker Noel Kinsella, who highlighted the country’s close ties with Greece.

According to the Greek news agency AMNA, Kinsella also stressed that the Canadian MPs and Senators morally support their Greek colleagues “who are working hard to deal with the debt crisis in Greece.”

Avramopoulos underlined Greece’s deep appreciation to Canada, which he said had been the first country that trusted Greece during the huge economic crisis by making investments and expressed Greece’s gratitude to Canada for hosting Greek immigrants.

He said that Greece and Canada are bound with long-term ties of friendship based on mutuality, cooperation and great respect for democracy and human rights.

The Foreign Minister also called on Canadian entrepreneurs to carry out more investments in Greece expressed his pride for the Greek community in Canada. Kinsella hosted a reception at the Canadian Parliament in honor of Avramopoulos, who held discussions with several MPs and Senators as well as with members of the Greek community in Ottawa.

A Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between the Greek-Canadian Chamber and the Hellenic Chamber in Montreal. Avramopoulos was also scheduled to meet with his Canadian counterpart John Baird for talks focusing on the latest developments in Europe and the efforts to deal with the economic crisis, EU-Canada relations and the developments in Southeastern Europe and the region of the Eastern Mediterranean, AMNA reported.

Youth Mobility Agreement in Force

According to the Foreign Ministry’s announcement, the Youth Mobility Agreement between Greece and Canada came into force on Feb. 1. The Agreement was signed during Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s visit to Greece, back in May 2011, and was ratified by the Hellenic Parliament on Oct.31, 2012.

This pioneering bilateral agreement provides for simplified procedures so that young Greek and Canadian citizens, between 18 and 35 can have the opportunity to travel, reside and work in each other’s country for up to 12 months, under the condition that they satisfy one of the following three prerequisites:

(a) They are graduates of post-secondary or tertiary education institutions and want to gain work experience, with a predetermined employment contract.
(b) They are students at post-secondary or tertiary education institutions and want to do a predetermined internship.
(c) They want to travel for a long vacation with the option of working temporarily to supplement their funds.

Interested Greek citizens may as well consult the Canadian Embassy website in Athens, while Canadian citizens may consult the Greek Embassy website in Ottawa. The necessary prerequisites and related documents will also be uploaded on the websites of the respective Ministries of Foreign Affairs.

Eldorado Gold Mine in Evros Nears OK

Within the next few weeks, the Canadian company, Eldorado Gold Corp.’s investment in Perama, Evros, is expected to be given final approval by the Greek government to proceed, over the vociferous protests of some local residents who say it will damage the environment and hurt tourism, although backers say it will bring in critical jobs during Greece’s crushing economic crisis.

The approval of environmental impact assessment, which now requires only one signature, and the signature of the Minister for the Environment are the last steps for the company to begin work on a 150 million euros  seems to be the final step in the process of 150 million euros ($200 million) investment.

This approval will lead to the issuance of environmental conditions’ permits and licenses for the mine in Perama. Then a technical report will be submitted to the competent authorities. Its approval will be the next step for the issuance of mining permits.

Greek Institute of Geo research, Perama ‘s subsoil has gold deposits of a value of 2 billion euros ($2.66 billion) along with an estimated 800 million euros ($1.065 billion) analysts have said.

Metropolitan Sotirios of Canada sounded the alarm about the decline of the Greek language due to globalization pressures in his encyclical on the occasion of the feast day of the Synaxis of the Three Holy Hierarchs.

His Eminence, from Toronto, and Exarch of All Canada, noted that, “many scholars as well as the Greek media are corrupting the Greek language. We watch and hear them every day on television even here in Canada.”

Metropolitan Sotirios, through his encyclical, calls Greek-Canadians, “to keep and protect the Greek culture, for the victory of the Orthodox light which is the Ttruth personified.” He urged all Greek-Orthodox to remain faithful to their traditions and culture.”Be careful not to deviate. The victory is yours,” he said in his call for the survival of the Greek Orthodox identity of the Canadian Diaspora.

Μητροπολίτης Σωτήριος: Να μείνουν πιστοί στις παραδόσεις τους οι ομογενείς

O  εκκλησιαστικός ηγέτης του Καναδά, Κ. Σωτήριος στην εγκύκλιό του με αφορμή τον εορτασμό των Τριών Ιεραρχών κρούει τον κώδωνα του κινδύνου για την υποχώρηση της ελληνικής γλώσσας στις πιέσεις της παγκοσμιοποίησης.

Ο μητροπολίτης επισημαίνει ότι «γραμματισμένοι και τα μέσα ενημέρωσης της Ελλάδας -όχι όλοι βέβαια- που θα έπρεπε να είναι οι φύλακες της γνησιότητας της ελληνικής γλώσσας, επιτρέπουν την νοθεία της. Όχι µόνο την επιτρέπουν, κάµνουν τη νοθεία οι ίδιοι. Τους βλέπουµε και τους ακούµε καθηµερινά, στις τηλεοράσεις που φθάνουν κι εδώ στις µακρινές µας νέες πατρίδες».

Ο κ. Σωτήριος μέσα από την εγκύκλιό του καλεί τους Ελληνοκαναδούς, «όχι για τη διάσωση, αλλά για την επικράτηση του ελληνικού πολιτισµού. Για την επικράτηση του φωτός της Ορθοδοξίας που είναι η Αλήθεια προσωποποιηµένη».

Ο μητροπολίτης Καναδά προτρέπει τους Ελληνορθοδόξους να μείνουν πιστοί στις παραδόσεις τους και τον πολιτισμό τους, να μην αποκάμουν και να κατακτήσουν την κορυφή της πυραμίδας, που είναι η σωτηρία.

«Πρόσεχε μην αποκάμεις στο δρόμο. Η νίκη είναι δική σου» καταλήγει στην έκκληση για την επιβίωση της Ελληνορθόδοξης ταυτότητας των Ελλήνων της Καναδικής Διασποράς.

Η Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μόντρεαλ στέλνει τη δική της βοήθεια

Ετοιμάσαν τα Χριστουγεννιάτικα καλάθια με φαγητά και γλυκά από τις Κοινωνικές Υπηρεσίες της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας του Μόντρεαλ και μοιρασθηκαν μέχρι τα Χριστούγεννα σε 100 οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη.
Τα καλάθια που εγιναν προορίζονταν κυρίως για γέρους και μονογονεϊκές οικογένειες, ενώ στον κύκλο των οικονομικά αδυνάμων προστέθηκαν και κάποιοι Έλληνες νεομετανάστες ή επαναπατρισθέντες μετανάστες ενώ κάποια δέματα με παιχνίδια προορίζονταν για οικογένειες με παιδιά.
Περιέχουν φαγητά και γλυκά από τις Κοινωνικές Υπηρεσίες της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας του Μόντρεαλ για να μοιρασθηκαν τα Χριστούγεννα σε 100 οικογένειες που έχουν ανάγκη.

Στη Στέγη Ηλικιωμένων της Κοινότητας προσφέρθηκε το ετήσιο Χριστουγεννιάτικο γεύμα σε ανθρώπους της τρίτης ηλικίας με προσφορές από όλο το φάσμα της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας του Μόντρεαλ.

«Οι κοινωνικές υπηρεσίες της Ελληνικής Κοινότητας του Μόντρεαλ ετοιμάζουν κάθε χρόνο τη Χριστουγεννιάτικη συνεισφορά τους στην κοινωνία όχι μόνο την Ελληνική αλλά και την Κεμπεκιώτικη», δήλωσε η διευθύντρια Ελένη Φακωτάκη.

Ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια από Καναδική οργάνωση στο Δήμο Βέροιας

Ο Δήμος Βέροιας, ευχαριστεί δημόσια την οργάνωση “MAGIC MISSION” με έδρα τον Καναδά, που στόχος της είναι να συνδράμει ελληνικά ιδρύματα και φορείς Κοινωνικής Προστασίας.
Η εν λόγω οργάνωση απέστειλε ανθρωπιστική βοήθεια που περιελάμβανε φάρμακα, ρούχα και τρόφιμα στο Δήμο μας, προκειμένου να ενισχύσει τις δράσεις του στον τομέα Κοινωνικής Προστασίας και Αλληλεγγύης.

Ιδιαιτέρως ευχαριστεί τις κυρίες: Βρησυίδα Μαύρου Παιδούση , Ψιλοπούλου Όλγα, και Ευφραιμίδου Παναγιώτα, για την διαμεσολάβηση και υποστήριξη των αιτημάτων του Δήμου μας ενώπιον του Διοικητικού Συμβουλίου της οργάνωσης και την άψογη οργάνωση της αποστολής της βοήθειας.
Όπως επίσης και την τέως Αντιδήμαρχο Κοινωνικής Προστασίας, Παιδείας και Εθελοντισμού κυρία Βαρβάρα Μπακαμτζόγλου-Σταυροπούλου, για την συμβολή της με το δίκτυο προσωπικών γνωριμιών της που ήταν και ο καθοριστικός παράγων για την επίτευξη του όλου εγχειρήματος.

Ά. Γεωργιάδης από το Μόντρεαλ για την ψήφο των αποδήμων by Μαρίνα Δρίτσα

Ο Άδωνις Γεωργιάδης από το Μόντρεαλ, ανακοίνωσε την πρόθεση της Επιτροπής του Ελληνισμού της Διασποράς, για την ολοκλήρωση του νομοσχεδίου περί της ψήφου των αποδήμων.

Ο βουλευτής της  ΝΔ επισήμανε πως όλοι οι εκπρόσωποι των κομμάτων της Επιτροπής, πλην του ΚΚΕ, έχουν στηρίξει επί της αρχής το νομοσχέδιο για την ψήφο των αποδήμων, το οποίο, όπως τόνισε, θα προβλέπει επιστολική ψήφο των αποδήμων που θα προσμετράται στη γενική ψηφοφορία κάθε κόμματος, την ώρα που ο επικεφαλής του ψηφοδελτίου Επικρατείας κάθε κόμματος θα είναι υποχρεωτικά ομογενής υποψήφιος. Το νομοσχέδιο βρίσκεται στο στάδιο της επεξεργασίας, ανακοίνωσε ο πρόεδρος της Επιτροπής του Ελληνισμού της Διασποράς, δηλώνοντας αισιόδοξος πως θα μπορέσει να εξασφαλίσει την ενισχυμένη πλειοψηφία του ελληνικού κοινοβουλίου για την ψήφισή του.

Ο βουλευτής της ΝΔ σημείωσε επίσης πως η κυβέρνηση, κατά την εκπόνηση του νομοσχεδίου για το νέο φορολογικό νομοσχέδιο, έχει υπόψη της να προσθέσει κάποιες φορολογικές ελαφρύνσεις και κίνητρα για τους Έλληνες ομογενείς, προκειμένου να προσελκύσει το επενδυτικό τους ενδιαφέρον. Ταυτόχρονα, διαβεβαίωσε πως θα υπάρξει απλούστευση στη διαδικασία των επενδύσεων για να γίνει η χώρα φιλική στις ξένες επενδύσεις.

Τέλος, κατά την παραμονή του στο Μόντρεαλ, ο Έλληνας βουλευτής επισκέφθηκε την Ελληνική Κοινότητα Μείζονος Μόντρεαλ, είχε συνομιλία με εκπροσώπους του ελληνικού κογκρέσου του Κεμπέκ και περιηγήθηκε το ημερήσιο ελληνικό σχολείο «Σωκράτης», προσφέροντας τη στήριξή του στην ελληνόφωνη παιδεία.

Canada’s Rouge Carrier to Fly to Greece

Air Canada unveiled its new low-cost carrier and leisure group Tuesday under a new brand, rouge, targeting several new leisure destinations in Europe and the Caribbean starting in July.
The Financial Post first reported on some of the details of the new low-cost carrier Tuesday ahead of a press conference in Toronto. They were the first to emerge in what is a key part of Air Canada’s strategy to lower its costs and expand in the years ahead. The low-cost carrier, coupled with the airline’s new 787 Dreamliners, is expected to have a dramatic impact on the competitiveness of the airline’s fleet.
Air Canada rouge intends to fly to Venice, Italy, Athens, Greece, Edinburgh, Scotland, and several destinations in Cuba, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, and Jamaica.
Service will primarily be out of Toronto initially, with two flights a week to Athens from Montreal.

Απευθείας πτήσεις από Αθήνα προς Τορόντο και Μόντρεαλ

 

Η ελληνοκαναδικών συμφερόντων αεροπορική εταιρεία Skygreece Airlines σκοπεύει να εντάξει στο πτητικό της πρόγραμμα απευθείας πτήσεις που θα συνδέουν την Αθήνα με τον Καναδά. Οι πτήσεις θα ξεκινήσουν πιθανότατα το Μάιο του 2013 και το εβδομαδιαίο πρόγραμμα περιλαμβάνει δύο πτήσεις (μία προς Τορόντο και μία προς Μόντρεαλ. Οι πτήσεις προς Νέα Υόρκη θα εκτελούνται 3 φορές την εβδομάδα. Στα άμεσα σχέδια της εταιρείας είναι και η απευθείας αεροπορική σύνδεση με το Σικάγο, καθώς και η απευθείας σύνδεση της Αθήνας με τη Νότια Αφρική.
Τα αεροπλάνα που θα χρησιμοποιηθούν είναι τα Airbus A340-300. Η εταιρεία δηλώνει ότι το πλήρωμα καμπίνας θα είναι 100% ελληνικό και στόχος είναι και οι πιλότοι να είναι Έλληνες.

Η συμφωνία οριστικοποιήθηκε σε συνάντηση που πραγματοποιήθηκε στο Τορόντο, στην κατοικία του Έλληνα πρεσβευτή στον Καναδά, Ελ. Αγγελόπουλου με τα στελέχη της εταιρείας. Την προσεχή εβδομάδα, η εταιρεία θα λειτουργήσει τα γραφεία της στο Μόντρεαλ και λίγο αργότερα στο Τορόντο, ενώ στη Νέα Υόρκη θα λειτουργήσουν το Φεβρουάριο. Το αντίστοιχο κατάστημα στην Αθήνα (στο αεροδρόμιο “Ελευθέριος Βενιζέλος”) έχει ήδη τεθεί σε λειτουργία, ενώ τα κεντρικά της στην Αθήνα βρίσκονται στο Μαρκόπουλο.
Η Skygreece Airlines σκοπεύει να ξεκινήσει διαφημιστική καμπάνια από τον Ιανουάριο του 2013, ενώ για τη θερινή περίοδο σκοπεύει να συνδυάσει τις πτήσεις στον ελληνικό χώρο με κρουαζιέρες σε ελληνικά νησιά.

Συγκινητικό μήνυμα των Κρητών του Καναδά: “Κρήτες, θα είμαστε στο πλευρό σας”

Με τη δέσμευση ότι στις δύσκολες ώρες που περνά η χώρα, οι Κρήτες του Καναδά θα είναι στο πλευρό των αδελφών τους “πίσω στην πατρίδα”, το μέλος του Προεδρείου  της οργανωτικής επιτροπής των εκδηλώσεων, και τ. Πρόεδρος Συλλόγου Κρητων Μόντρεαλ , Μιχάλης Χριστοδουλάκης, εκφράζει τις ευχαριστίες του για τη συμμετοχή του περιφερειάρχη Κρήτης στις εκδηλώσεις που έγιναν στο Μόντρεαλ , με επιστολή του στον πρόεδρο του Περιφερειακού Συμβουλίου, κ. Γ. Πιτσούλη.

Όπως αναφέρει: “…Για εμάς τους απόδημους Κρήτες, ήταν πραγματικά μεγάλη χαρά και τιμή, που ο πρώτος πολίτης της ιδιαίτερης πατρίδας μας παρευρέθηκε σε αυτές τις εορταστικές εκδηλώσεις ορόσημο για την ιστορική παρουσία μας στην ευρύτερη περιοχή του Μόντρεαλ. Αν και βρισκόμαστε περίπου 8000 χλμ μακριά απο την Κρήτη, έχουμε την ιδιαίτερη πατρίδα μας βαθιά ριζωμένη μέσα μας. Είμαι σίγουρος πως ο κος Αρναουτάκης το διαπίστωσε αυτό και ελπίζω να το μεταφέρει και σε εσάς. Αυτη τη φλόγα προσπαθούμε να μεταλαμπαδεύσουμε και στα παιδιά μας. Δεν σας κρύβω, ότι πολλές φορές είναι πάρα πολύ δύσκολο. Καταβάλουμε όμως κάθε δυνατή προσπάθεια ούτως ώστε το κάθε ένα απο αυτά παιδιά, δεύτερης, τρίτης και πολλά τέταρτης γενιάς, να προφέρουν με περηφάνια το είμαι Έλληνας!  Αποσκοπούμε, το καθένα απο αυτά, να γίνουν άξιοι πρεσβευτές της πατρίδας μας στον εργασιακό τους χώρο και στην κοινωνία γενικότερα.

Κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του κου Αρναουτάκη στο Μόντρεαλ, είχα την ευκαιρία να τον συνοδεύσω σε διάφορες συνάντησης του με τις τοπικές αρχές. Διαπίστωσα την αγωνία του όσον αφορά τα προβλήματα της Ελλάδας και το πόσο πιστικός ήταν στις συζητήσεις του με τους επίσημους  φορείς που ήρθε σε επαφή. Συναντήθηκε επίσης με αρκετούς επιχειρηματίες και κατέβαλε μεγάλη προσπάθεια για να προωθήσει τα Κρητικά προϊόντα στον Καναδά. Ελπίζω σύντομα να δρέψουμε τους καρπούς αυτών των προσπαθειών και να συνεισφέρουν τα δέοντα στη δύσκολη οικονομική κατάσταση που περνά η χώρα μας.

Κύριε Πρόεδρε, εμάς τους απόδημους Κρήτες του Μόντρεαλ, θα μας έχετε συμπαραστάτες και αρωγούς σε αυτή τη δύσκολη φάση που περνά η πατρίδα μας. Αυτό έπραξαν και οι προκάτοχοι Κρήτες σε παρόμοιες δύσκολες στιγμές”.

Kafopoulos Says Greek-Israeli Links Key

The International Relations Department of University of Laval, Quebec, organized a lecture over the Greek-Israeli relations issue. The event was led by the Consul General of Greece in Montreal, Thanos Kafopoulos and Israeli Consul General Joel Lion.

Before an audience of students and professors, two representatives highlighted the importance of  Greek-Israeli cooperation and it must be across the board on all levels, and due to the geographical proximity of Greece to Israel, the similar values and cultures can only aid in cementing a deep and long-lasting relationship.

Kafopoulos said that Cyprus is an important link especially to the sector of energy. Oil holdings in South Cyprus, with Israel’s support, will offer various alternatives of the energy supply around Greece and European Union, he said. Lion said that co-operation between the countries is deep and lasting.

Greek Canadian Diplomatic Relations Are 70

This year is the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Greece, as the two countries made a two-day exchanging of their diplomats, during WWII.

In a statement, Foreign Affairs Minister of Canada, John Baird, said, “Seventy years to the day that the Hellenic Republic first opened a diplomatic mission in Ottawa, I am proud to say that ties run deep and warm relations endure.”

He, also, added: “This vibrant partnership is rooted in shared values and nurtured by the intricate ties between our people, Canada’s large Greek diaspora key among them. In an uncertain world, Canada and Greece enjoy a level of cooperation that has yielded positive and tangible results for both our countries. I was disappointed that my Greek counterpart’s planned visit to Ottawa to mark this special occasion had to be delayed due to Hurricane Sandy, but know we will both work to reschedule at the earliest possible opportunity. Canada remains committed to building on the long-standing ties between our two countries.”

by 'Ελενα Αποστολάκη on NOVEMBER 2, 2012 in ΕΙΔΉΣΕΙΣ Εβδομήντα χρόνια επίσημων διπλωματικών σχέσεων μεταξύ Καναδά και Ελλάδας εορτάζονται φέτος, καθώς οι δύο χώρες συνήψαν τη διμερή ανταλλαγή διπλωματών, κατά τη διάρκεια του Β’ Παγκόσμιου Πολέμου. «Αισθάνομαι περήφανος που, εβδομήντα χρόνια από την ημέρα που η Ελληνική Δημοκρατία εγκαινίασε, για πρώτη φορά, διπλωματική αποστολή στην Οτάβα, οι σχέσεις μας παραμένουν στενές και θερμές» δήλωσε, με την ευκαιρία της επετείου, ο Καναδός υπουργός Εξωτερικών Τζον Μπέιρντ. Ο κ. Μπέιρντ υπογράμμισε τον ρόλο της ελληνικής Διασποράς στην ενδυνάμωση των σχέσεων μεταξύ Ελλάδας-Καναδά: «Η ζωντανή συνεργασία μας έχει τις ρίζες της σε κοινές αξίες και τροφοδοτείται από τους πολυεπίπεδους δεσμούς μεταξύ των λαών μας. Μεταξύ των σημαντικότερων, είναι η μεγάλη ελληνική Διασπορά στον Καναδά». Εξέφρασε, τέλος τη λύπη του για την αναβολή της επίσκεψης του Έλληνα ομολόγου του, Δημήτρη Αβραμόπουλου, λόγω του τυφώνα «Σάντι» και την ελπίδα να τον υποδεχθεί, στο μέλλον. «Ο Καναδάς διατηρεί τη δέσμευσή του για την περαιτέρω οικοδόμηση των ήδη μακροχρόνιων δεσμών μεταξύ των χωρών μας» κατέληξε ο κ. NGO Shield of Athena Wins Excellence Award

The Shield of Athena’s Multilingual Community Outreach Department received the 2012 Excellence Award from the Ministry of Health and Social Services of Québec, in the category Support to Vulnerable Persons and Groups.

The award was presented by the Canadian Minister of Health Réjean Hebert and the Minister for Public Health and Youth Protection Veronique Hivon in Quebec City.

The organization was cited for its commitment to provide information about domestic violence and abuse in different languages of the world. “We aim to overcome any language barriers found in the different ethn-ocultural communities of Montreal by providing the victims of family violence with all the necessary information through a social worker that speaks their language,” noted the coordinator, Maud Pontel.

For the past 21 years Shield of Athena has been supporting and promoting the rights of abused women who try to break the circle of domestic violence providing emergency shelter to women and their children 24/7.

Greece’s Consul General of Montreal Talks About Crisis in his Homeland

With an article for the local English newspaper The Gazette, Greece’s Consul General of Montreal Thanos Kafopoulos refers to financial crisis that Greece struggles with as well eurozone’s policy in regards to it.

Mr Kafopoulos writes that Greece for the first time in decades elected and accepted a coalition government which is making efforts to solve some financial problems through privatizations in order to improve the country’s bad image.

According to the Consul General, all Greek parties have realized that the Troika’s policy does not help at all; on the contrary, it causes further problems, such as recession and higher unemployment rates, reports Kafopoulos. He also stresses that any austerity measures imposed on Greece in the future would be almost disastrous for the country.

Moreover, he believes that the need to establish a central supervisory service for the eurozone has arisen, which would support banks in danger to avoid future recession.

“If this mechanism applies to Greek banks, it will have positive repercussions for the economy as a whole, given that Athens is set to receive about 50 billion euros for the recapitalization of its banking sector. It would be a relief on public finances if these funds went directly to the banks and were not added to an already bloated national debt,” writes Kafopoulos.

Consul General concludes that Europe should be led to “a political union, comprised of the member states of the eurozone area.”

Greek Mayors in Two Montreal Municipalities

Helen Fotopoulos, a member of the City of Montreal (Quebec) Executive Committee and Cote des Neiges City Councilor, will replace Gérald Tremblay who resigned after witnesses linked him to illegal party financing skimmed from city construction contracts as part of an alleged Mafia scheme.

Many Councilor members supported Fotopoulos to become the next Mayor of Quebec as the Chairman of the Committee, Michael Applebaum, does not speak French well.

In 2001, Fotopoulos joined Tremblay to form Union-Montréal and won three straight elections. She served two terms as Plateau-Mont-Royal borough mayor and is currently CDN city councilor. She is the executive committee member responsible for culture, heritage and women’s issues.

At the same time, in Laval, the largest suburb of Montreal and third largest municipality in the province of Quebec, Greek lawyer Vasilis Aggelopoulos will stand in for Gilles Vaillancour, who is set to resign amid allegations of corruption.
